Start Your Day Well

The way we start each morning sets the tone for our day. The choices we make upon waking can have a profound impact on our day. If, still drowsy, we hit the ground running, rush to prepare ourselves to face our worldly obligations, we will likely feel fatigued and overwhelmed for most of the day. An enjoyable and relaxing morning can energize us as well as give us courage to meet the challenges awaiting. By beginning our day in a focused and centred fashion, we are more likely to make it our own. We get to set the tone of our expectations and choose the mood we will use to respond to our circumstances. A gentle, reflective and thoughtful morning will prepare us to create a gentle, conscious and thoughtful day. The simplest way to eliminate the rush from the morning routine is to rise earlier.

If you have children, getting them into routines and teaching them disciplines will also give you more time. It may be hard at first, but you will soon grow to love the extra time to really enjoy watching the sun rise or connect with your loved ones before you go in your separate directions. There are many ways you can constructively use the time you gain. A mere half-hour of quietness to examine your goals, thank God for the richness in your life and contemplate the blessings you have in your life can lift your spirit. You can also devote a portion of your personal time to activities that ground and delight you, such as gratitude prayer, stretching, walking, singing, reading

or listening to music. If you feel there is little room for change in your start-of-the-day routine, work on making each activity you engage in meaningful. The time you spend every day savouring a soothing cup of tea or washing away tension in a hot shower can serve as a potent reminder to care for yourself no matter what the hour.

Your morning is yours and reflect not only your practical needs but also the needs of your soul. When you centre yourself at the start of your day, you will likely find it easier to remain centred during the rest of your day and be more empowered to make better choices throughout the day.
